What is oxidative stress?
Oxidative stress or oxidative stress corresponds to an attack on cells by free radicals , also called " reactive oxygen species " .
In question: pollution, drugs, the sun, a diet that is too fatty, smoking, alcohol, intensive physical activity or, on the contrary, a sedentary lifestyle... but one of the major culprits of this oxidation is also the stress of modern life.
Consequences of oxidative stress
Oxidative stress causes, on a low or medium scale, the denaturation (or oxidation) of many elements of your body: proteins, lipids, sugars, and thereby the "rusting" of tissues, muscles, arteries, and even nerve and/or brain cells.
Result: these phenomena accelerate aging.
How to fight against this process of oxidation?
It can be neutralized by antioxidant molecules , such as vitamins E and C, and particularly by selenium .
The choice of selenium for the fight against oxidation
Selenium is an antioxidant trace element playing a key role in several protective functions of the organism, in particular in the fight against oxidative stress. It is mainly stored in the body in the muscles and the liver.
Roles:
When carrying out an exercise or a competition of high intensity, and what is more, when it is practiced on an occasional basis, we observe a significant increase in free radicals which leads to structural damage in the muscle cells. The direct consequences are reduced muscle strength and an earlier onset of fatigue (associated or not with cramps, digestive disorders, etc.), causing harmful poor performance for the athlete!
It should be noted that the simple fact of increasing the defense capacities, in particular in antioxidants, of our body and our muscles induces protection towards them and reduces fatigue.
Why supplement with selenium ?
Sporty, sporty: during our physical efforts 🏋🏻 ♀️ we produce a significant amount of free radicals ❌
👉 Consequences direct: reduced muscle strength, earlier onset of fatigue (associated or not with cramps, digestive disorders).. all this going against the improvement of our sports performance ⚠️
💡 Let's increase like this the defense capacities, in particular in terms of antioxidants, of our body and our muscles, in order to induce protection towards the latter and reduce tiredness.
✅ Antioxidant supplementation in athletes, whether amateur or professional, is therefore interesting, especially during periods of intensive training and competition.
Selenium deficiency
Vegan diet, infection of the small intestine (celiac disease, Crohn's disease, etc.) leading to poor assimilation: the risk of selenium deficiency can be high in these cases.
This selenium deficiency can then result in:
- less resistance to infections,
- muscle weakness,
- anemia
- cardiac arrhythmia
💡 Advice
The combination of selenium and zinc is beneficial for your body because their synergistic action effectively protects your cell membranes.
